The growing U.S. Latino population, which includes millions who are uninsured, faces serious health and financial burdens brought on by air pollution,” Dr. Elena Rios, president of the National Hispanic Medical Association, said in a statement.
Latinos are less likely to have health insurance than any other racial or ethnic group; nearly one in every three (32.4 percent) Latinos lacks health insurance.

via New Mexican Migration Patterns - New America Media
The Immigration Policy Center on Monday released a summary of recent data on Mexican migration to and from the United States. The data reveals an emerging new reality: fewer immigrants are coming, fewer are leaving, and a majority of the unauthorized population has been here for a decade or longer.
I think the above is an interesting context to this:
CENTRAL AMERICA-MEXICO: Following the Trail of Missing Migrants - IPS ipsnews.net
According to the National Human Rights Commission, 20,000 migrants were kidnapped in 2010.
The most recent kidnapping of a group of migrants took place in June in Veracruz, when at least 80 people, mainly Central Americans, went missing. Nothing has been heard from them since.
and this:
MEXICO: Tens of Thousands of Missing Central American Migrants - IPS ipsnews.net
But perhaps the most horrifying face of the phenomenon is the disappearance of migrants. A recent report by the Mexican legislature’s committee on population, borders and migration affairs states that more than 60,000 Central and South Americans went missing between 1998 and 2008 in Mexico on their journey to the U.S.
I googled specifically because I had the intense conviction that the housemaid in question could be a Latina woman.
I cannot even begin to decode the many layers of fail in this. The eternal invisibility of Latin American women in the North. The eternal status of Latinas as “good enough to be housekeepers or nannies”, the demonization of immigrant women who work as domestic labor. And now this woman who is going to have to endure it all, every stereotype and stigma carried on her back.
And just think for a second how this is not the usual tale of infidelity involving the regular trope of powerful male politicians. Think of the power disparity and how little options a Mexican housekeeper might have. How consent becomes blurred and it involves not only consent during the act but also the woman’s employment, perhaps her immigration status, her future in the country (and the future of her child(ren)), etc…
Infidelity obviously wasn’t enough for the Governor. He had to exercise the worst kind of power a person in his position has access to and make sure it’s kept hidden and hushed.
if I wrote a semi lengthy piece about the cult of Frida Kahlo as the ultimate “Other”, praised by White women precisely because she is the “Other” and of course, her beauty choices are exotic and different and so daring! “So daring because.they.are.from.a.woman.that.is.not.one.of.us”.
And she had a wacky relationship with Diego Rivera and he cheated on her but it was OK because she also liked girls? Oh, you mean like a brown, exoticized other almost like a noble savage? And hegemonic cultures love to throw around a noble savage for “illustration purposes”? And if said “noble savage” can also be turned into a White feminist icon, all the better?
And how women heading from Latin America have very little (if anything) in common with Frida Kahlo’s plight, which was so unique and so much re-told from the perspective of art collectors who are also almost always male and White and now women artist who happen to be Latinas have to live to the expectations of this appropriated narrative and are expected to paint in colorful colors, with a “Latin@ flavor! and throw in some rhythm there, girl! and since you are there, tell us about your sexual prowess as well!”.
Oh, you mean, that not everyone in Latin America identifies with her or her life? What do you mean? Don’t you see I have an art collection to peddle?!
All right. Probably too many would be offended on behalf of everyone else. So I’d rather not do it.

News Corp. to Introduce Fox Hispanic Media - PRNewse
This is so exciting! A Hispanic Fox News! I wonder if they would let me do their branding campaign. The outline of my proposal would include:
Naming: Fox para Espalda Mojadas (Fox for Wetbacks)
Byline: El unico canal donde te odiamos en tu propio idioma (The only channel where we hate you in your own language)
And of course, colorful sombreros and slogans along the lines of “Because we know you are either lazy or up to no good trying to steal our jobs” and “The best Hispano is the Hispano that watches our channel from outside the US”.
“You know how how Latinos are… they aren’t as motivated.”
Said to me, a white Latino, in New York when I was 30 years old. (via microaggressions)
The amount of times I heard jokes about this. Or if I tell someone I’ll have something ready tomorrow they give me the *wink*wink* mañana, like your people always say? Har Har!
I sincerely don’t know what’s worse: the assumption that I might be a fiery sex bomb with a temper to behold or that I am a lazy ass incapable of delivering any deadline.
